Without the distant call of the Strandja mountains in Bulgaria, and the distinct voice of our beloved Yanka Rupkina, the story of Keranka would simply be an historical footnote, in a learned book about the history of music. And what is peculiar to Bulgarian musical history, has been made famous by Yanka, who is the most important ambassador to the world, of this traditional musical artform. Born in a tiny village near the Black Sea port of Bourgas, and at the foot of the Strandja mountains ? which give their name to her unique style of singing ? it is the origin of her often melancholy songs, with their strange inherent optimism and hope for a better life to come, either here or in the next world.
